Maoists release one Italian hostage in Odisha

Claudio Colangelo, one of the two abducted Italian citizens who were kidnapped in Kandhamal district of Odisha on March 14, was released by the Maoists late on Sunday afternoon.
Talking to The Hindu, State Director General of Police Manmohan Praharaj confirmed the release of Mr. Colangelo. “I have this much of information to share,” he told this correspondent over the phone.
Mr. Colangelo was released by the Maoists in the presence of a small group of media persons who had been invited by the extremists for the purpose. He spoke to his wife in Italy as soon as he came out of the Maoist hideout.
The other abducted Italian Bosusco Paolo was still in the custody, according to the police.
Mr. Paolo had been staying for the past 19 years in Puri where he was running a travel agency named Odisha Adventurous Trekking, while Mr. Colangelo was a tourist.
On the other hand, the abducted Biju Janata Dal legislator Jhina Hikaka, who was kidnapped by Maoists from Koraput district early on Saturday, remained untraced till late in the afternoon.
It may be recalled that the negotiation for the release of the two Italians had been suspended by the two mediators on Saturday in the wake of the abduction of Mr. Hikaka.
The two interlocutors, B.D. Sharma and Dandapani Mohanty, had appealed to the Maoists to release the hostages on humanitarian ground.
